Soap for Haiti

While we were in Orlando, Kori introduced us to a website that listed a host of volunteer opportunities in the area. Disney actually backed the list by offering free tickets in exchange for several hours of work. It was too late for us to redeem tickets as we only had a couple days remaining in Florida -- but since we had a free morning, we decided the opportunity to volunteer was too good to pass up anyways.

So early in the morning we headed to a large warehouse, ready for some work and adventure!

The smell of soap was almost overwhelming as we stepped into the warehouse and saw tub after tub loaded with small soaps. This organization picks up the extra soaps from hotel rooms in central Florida, cleans and sanitizes them, then ships them to Haiti. Turning waste into a life-saving commodity. All it takes is allot of hands-on teamwork to sort and clean the piles of soaps before sending them through the sanitation process.

Inspecting the soaps

Armed with a potato-peeler, we sorted through hundreds of soaps, peeling off any imperfections or cracks.

Standing for hours gave time for lots of good conversations.

Sorting the piles of shampoos, conditioners, soap, and an occasional hotel key!

And finally, counting and packaging the soaps!

Assembly-line style

It was a fantastic opportunity for our family. At the conclusion of the morning, they had us share a song and take pictures with the staff. Several of the people we met also came to our service over the weekend. May the Lord use our time with them and conversations shared to work in their hearts!

"Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing."
Psalm 100:2

Looks like fun and very intersting/different to what you're used to. :) I'm very sure that they will be very happy to get the soap! Loved the pics.

I had recently heard about the recycling of hotel soaps...that is SO awesome. What a great use of something that would normally just be thrown away!
