Summer Treat

From almost as far back as I can remember, summer days just aren't complete without at least one batch of our all-time favorite hot-weather treat. Mm-m-m-m! From climbing on a stool to help Mommy cut the bananas, to eagerly peeking in the freezer (hoping the mixture would solidify faster).... this recipe has long been a family favorite.

Last week some dear friends from Florida visited and our little girls rallied to mix up a batch for everyone.

Our Favorite Fruit Slushy
Mix together in a large bowl...
1 can frozen lemonade concentrate
1 can frozen orange juice concentrate
1 can (20oz) crushed pineapple
2.5 cups water

Add 4 cups strawberries (sliced) ...

... and 6 bananas (sliced)

Stir it all together and pour into popsicle molds or muffin tins. Freeze 'till solid. Enjoy!

Our Focus

"When you have no helpers, see your helpers in God. When you have many helpers, see God in all your helpers. When you have nothing but God, see all in God. When you have everything, see God in everything.
Under all conditions,
stay thy heart only on the Lord."
--Charles Spurgeon

This past Sunday we shared our first services without Josiah. 'Stre-e-tching' to say the least! But as we have experienced so many times before, -- when we are feeling totally inadequate and have no option but to cry out to the Lord, His strength is sufficient. And often exceedingly so.

Although the music had a few 'rough' spots that still need attention and more practice (yes, Josiah -- it takes about 3-4 of us pitching in to fill your parts!), we are so grateful that the Spirit of the Lord is not limited by our weaknesses!

After all (as we often have to remind ourselves), while music is a huge part of what we do, the most important thing is having our hearts --under all conditions -- 'stayed on the Lord'!

A 'Fair' Pull

With the arrival of these warm summer days comes the anticipation and enjoyment of area County Fairs. Last weekend, after sharing for a special tent service in Iowa, we had extra time to take in a few of the local festivities....

Pedal-pulls -- a midwest traditon

The further they go, the heavier it gets!

Keep smilin' Susanna!

Our little champ -- surprising us by taking first in her division!

Hannah gives a final push

And even good-natured Stephen pulled -- upon discovering his little sisters signed him up!

Daily Blessings

What a week -- filled to the brim with laughter... joys... tears... sadness... physical work... fellowship... and fun times. And once again we're reminded that God is good and His mercies fail not. When we sit back to count our blessings, the list adds up faster than price digits on our Nebraska gas meters!!!

Here's a quick overview of our week...

Corn Season --

Every summer we look forward to at least one huge 'corn day'.
Straight from the field to our freezer...

...with a few steps in between.
With this husking crew, we could average 10 ears/minute!
Bethany has always been our 'corn blanch-er' --
and creating our own outdoor kitchen worked so well this year!

Smiling from ear to ear!
(Okay, so maybe that's a bit corny...)

Fellowship & Fun --

Some dear friends from Prairie Bible Camp came to visit us for a couple days en route to sign up for college classes. The evenings were perfect for outdoor activities. Isn't summertime wonderful!?

Jump!!!

Practicing --

Without Josiah, it sometimes seems like we're having to start over musically on many songs. We've been practicing with various family members taking over his all-important roles.
We miss ya brother!

Our new bass singer and guitar player -- concentrating.

Water Fun --

Yesterday evening we were able to load up our 'ol boat and spend the evening at the lake. How refreshing!

Oh yes, and exciting, too! [smile]

God Be With You...

By His counsels guide, uphold you.
With His sheep securely fold you;

Neath His wings protecting hide you;
Daily manna still provide you;

With the oil of joy anoint you;
Sacred ministries appoint you;

When life’s perils thick confound you;
Put His arms unfailing round you.

Of His promises remind you;
For life’s upper garner bind you;

Keep love’s banner floating o’er you,
Strike death’s threatening wave before you;

God be with you 'till we meet again!

We love you, Josiah!

Stephen

Happy 14th Birthday, Stephen!

As in God's great plan little boys grow into men, it's been quite a year watching you grow and change! I think I was still taller than you at your last birthday, but today I stand eye level with your smile -- and enjoy listening to your bass voice. Not only that, but it has been a delight to see your energy and skills active in tackling "whate'r your hand finds to do" -- from loading our huge trailer with backyard junk and limbs, to scraping the house, to milking cows, to creating unique and practical items with your wood tools, and pouring yourself into children's ministry drama roles.

How grateful we are for the skills and talents God has given you! Continue to 'press in' during the coming year -- not only in the physical, but in your walk with Jesus as well. May you continue to grow and stand strong in HIM! We love you!

"Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the firey darts of the wicked one."
Ephesians 6:14-16

Little known facts about Stephen --

  • He was born with a large birthmark across his forehead (so cute!)
  • Walked his walker down a set of cement stairs at 11 months (adventuresome guy!)
  • He has started playing acoustic guitar on our latest songs
  • He likes ketchup and Catalina dressing on his tacos
  • Unanimously voted 'gained most heigth' this year -- having passed Matthias and closing in on Andrew
  • Is keeping up with Josiah's shoe-growth legacy -- wears size 14
  • His favorite books of the Bible are 1 & 2 Samuel

Winds of Change

The services we'll be sharing this weekend have special significance for our family. Not necessarily because of past memories. But in light of future changes.

Yes, July will be a month of adjustment -- Josiah is planning to 'spread his wings' next week and take off for Cody, Wyoming.

As he has shared, "I really sense the Lord leading me to re-direct my time and focus on what He has called me to [mission aviation]. Up until this point I've been able to work on completing my flight hours through our home time/spare time. But I've been praying about pursuing this on a larger scale."

And though we'll miss him tremendously -- we're excited for him, too. He will be staying with some dear friends, working construction, and flying, flying, flying. [smile]

His eventual goal is to enroll in a mission training school in Ohio after completing the 500 hours of flight time required. Please keep him in prayer as he seeks the Lord's best during this time of transition in his life! Currently, we don't know the length of his commitment in Wyoming as it's work-related (we hope to get him back in Nebraska before too long!), but we're trusting the Lord's guidance each step of the way. We will keep you posted!

Another huge prayer request is for our upcoming ministry opportunities as a family. With Mom starting to learn bass guitar and Stephen deepening his vocal range, we're working to fill in the 'gaps' -- though undeniably this will be a stretching time for all of us! Many opportunities to rely on His strength in our weakness!

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord
and He delighteth in his way."
Psalm 37:23

"We will miss you dearly,
you wonderful big brother of ours!!"

Bethany

Happy 21st Birthday Bethany!

Bethany, what a joy you are to our home! From your sparkling brown eyes to your creative and caring ways, we are so grateful for you! It has been incredibly special to watch as you have grown from a cute little girl into a beautiful young lady -- and one of my very best friends. I will always treasure our adventures together: shopping for new outfits, brainstorming a new decorating project, experimenting with hairstyles, team-working on a photo shoot, or late night chats wondering if you'd ever decide it was bedtime! [smile]

And most of all I've been personally encouraged and challenged by your tender walk with the Lord. Seeing the many ways He has used your talents to minister to others. Praying over new opportunities and decisions. Discovering your Scripture memory cards hung by the laundry shelves. You are a blessing!

We love you, Bethany!!!

Beans Forever

As any of you who have visited our part of the country already know -- we live in the heartland of corn and soybean fields; gravel roads, and farm equipment. While our family resides in the center of Seward (population 6,428), we have many farming friends in the area -- and every once in awhile we get a taste of real farm livin' ourselves.

Such as this morning. After gathering enough assorted and dangerous-looking 'tools' we headed to the fields right after sun-up for several hours of 'walking beans' -- cutting out the unwelcome corn. It was great to be out in the breezy morning air!

Go, Andrew, go!

Even our friend, Kori, joined us -- adding much fun to the experience!

The whole crew. Ready for ......um... a little clean-up!

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might."

Festivities

It was a full and eventful day. Full of sunshine, singing, friends, fellowship, fireworks and smiles all around.

But Bethany beat me to the computer tonight and stole my post [grin]. So if you want to hear the latest Wissmann family news, I suppose you'll have to buzz over to her blog to find it!

Faith of our Fathers

On May 17th, 1829, John Jay (first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court) was drawing near death after a life of serving his country. As recorded by his son, Judge William Jay, John Jay was asked if he had any final words for his children.
He responded,

"They have the Book"

"His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue."
2 Peter 1:3

A very blessed Fourth of July to you all!

A Surrendered Heart

If mere hands can so easily fashion such a change --
Can we fathom the work of Christ in a surrendered heart?

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
Romans 12:1-2
